LINES FROM SAMSON  AGONISTES   

REFERENCE: 

These lines have been taken from the English book poem, "Lines from Samson Agonistes", written by John Milton.


CONTEXT:

It is a famous poetic drama, Samson was a man of immense strength but had been taken captive, through the treachery of his wife Dehlila, by the Philistines. His enemies blinded him and brought him to a great temple for the final trial. He brought down the roof of the temple and killed all his enemies. He sacrificed his own life at the same time.


STANZA #1

He ---------undaunted, where -------him.


To heave---------- break -------------performed


None --------- antagonists


EXPLANATION:

Samson was calm and quiet. He came to the temple in a very bold style. He was asked to heave, draw and break things. He performed all those tasks with the incredible force of his body. None of the wrestlers of the Jews could dare to challenge him. They were watching the astonishing power of that wonderful man quite stunned.


STANZA#2


At length, for ---------they led


 As overtired --------- awhile


with both---------------massy pillars


That to the --------- main support


EXPLANATION: 

Samson's enemies declared interval and his guide directed him towards the pillars, He requested his guide that he was overtired and he may be permitted to take some rest by leaning over the two huge pillars, which were giving the main support to the arched roof of the temple.


STANZA#3

He unsuspicious --------him, which Samson


And eyes ----------- prayed


or some great --------------revolved.


EXPLANATION:

The guide allowed Samson to lean over the pillars for the placed one hand on one pillar and second on the other pillar. He bowed down his head. He was either praying or fun of him thinking about any serious matter. His enemies were shouting and making.


STANZA #4

At last --- erect thus------aloud


Hitherto ---------- commands imposed


Now, of my --------other trials


 As with a----------- all who behold 


EXPLANATION:

Samson, after some pause, took his head up and shouted out. I have been doing according to your commands because I was your captive. You all observed my strength with wonder and delight. Now I want to show the greatest trial of my strength and you all shall be amazed to observe it.


STANZA #5

This uttered,-------nerve


As with the force-----pent


He tugged, -------- came and drew


Upon the -------------- beneath


EXPLANATION:

Samson gathered the whole force of his body, he bowed and pushed The pillars. It appeared as if some had broken the dam or some had opened the mouth of the storm. He shook the pillars here and there with dangerous jerks. He caused cracks in the pillars. As soon as the pillars automatically the whole roof fell down with great explosion.


STANZA #6

Lords, Ladies,------ priests


Their choice --------- not only


Samson with -----------inevitably aven


pulled down ---------------- on himself.


EXPLANATION:

The roof of the temple fell down upon all those sitting there. Their ladies, captains, officers, and priests all were killed. They had gathered there from all parts of Philistine to mark this feast. Samson himself was killed with them. He sacrificed his own life but he killed all the great leaders of Philistine.
