REFERENCE

These lines have been taken from the English book poem," Lines from Ulysses", written by Alfred Lord Tennyson.



CONTEXT

The poem symbolizes the human spirit at its highest. The old Greek Hero, Ulysses, seeks one great adventure before his death. He is encouraging his mariners to go for the last exploration in the sea. They are old but they have the courage and confidence. They shall strive and shall never withdraw.


STANZA#1


My mariner's


Souls _____toiled and wrought _____ with me 


That ________ welcome took 


free hearts____________are old


old age__________and his toil. 


Death ____________ ere the end 


Not ________________ with gods.


EXPLANATION

The old hero Ulysses is appreciating the services of his sailors, who stood by him in all the conditions. They.. rendered great services for him. They fought with the forces of nature and opposed. them. They have become old but they must not worry about their old age. Old age has got its own dignity and work. It is only death that closed the chapter of man's activities. They have to do something extraordinary before their death. 


STANZA #2


The lights begin ____________ rocks 


The long day _____________  deep


Moans round ___________, my friends


This not too______________ world,


EXPLANATION

In these lines, the poet has used various symbols to encourage his sailors. They used to start their voyage. when the day was ending and the lights were twinkling. It is exactly the same situation. The moon is climbing up and the sea is moaning for his old friends. They must respond to the shouts of the sea. It is not too late to find a new island.


STANZA#3

Puff off in_________________smite


The sounding _____________purpose hold 


To sale __________and baths 


It may be ________________wash us down 


It may be ______________happy isles


And see _____________we knew


EXPLANATION

Ulysses wants his sailors to keep their cars in action. They shall strive to reach Baths, where all the western stars gink down in the morning. It is possible they all may be drowned in the middle of their voyage. It is also possible that they may reach the Islands of joy, where their great national warrior Achilles will greet them. 


STANZA #4


Tho much _____________and tho


We are not __________in old days 


moved earth ____________ which we are, 


Made weak ___________but strong in will 


To strive, ____________ not to yield


we are one equal ____________ hearts.


EXPLANATION

These are the ending lines of the poem. Ulysses admits that they are not now as strong as they were at their young age. They had performed miracles in youth. Their bodies are weakened but they have the same heroic hearts. They have the same courage and confidence. So they decide to go ahead with full determination. They shall explore, they shall search and they shall never step back. They shall continue their struggle until they die.


STANZA#5


And then the justice 


In fair round belly________ capon lined 


with eyes severe________formal cut


Full of wise _________modern instances


EXPLANATION

The fifth stage is the retirement stage, where he plays the part of justice. He is now relaxing and eating much. He puts on weight and he has a big belly. There comes, seriousness over his face. He is full of examples and old references. He decides the disputes of the people and acts as justice at this stage. He keeps the formal cut of beard and becomes the nobleman of his circle.


STANZA#6


Into the lean _______ pantaloons 


With spectacles __________on the side 


His youthful ________a world too wide


For his shrunk _________manly voice


Turning again __________ pipes


And whistles in his sound.


The sixth stage shifts


EXPLANATION

The sixth stage makes him a weak and sick person. He has a boney structure, keeps sight glasses at the tip of his nose, and looks like a clown. He has a big pocket. He puts on the stockings of his youth, which are now too wide for his crumbled legs. He can not speak clearly. There is whistling in his sound.


STANZA#7


The last scene of all 


That ends _________ eventful history 


Is second _______ mere oblivion


Sans teeth, ________, sans everything


EXPLANATION

This is the last stage, which closes the chapter of man's life. It is a very miserable stage. He becomes helpless like a child and purely dependent on others. Thus the poet has called it second infancy. There is no difference between an old man and a child. Both are alike. It is only darkness. He is waiting for his death. He has no eyesight, no taste, and no teeth.
