LINES FROM ULYSSES

ALFRED LORD TENNYSON 

Lord Tennyson was the representative poet of the Victorian age. He was designated as poet Laureate in 1850. His technical excellence is superb. The verbal melody of his verse ranked him among the greatest poets of English literature. "Ulysses" was published in the first collected edition of his poems. It is a wonderful piece of dramatic monologue. Ulysses was a hero of Greek mythology. This speech refers to the last great, a voyage in his old age. 

ELEMENTS OF POETRY:

1. Rhyme

This is one of the noblest passages in blank verse. There is clarity of thoughts and harmony in the verse. All the pauses with regular intervals.

2. Similes and (Metaphor)

"Souls that have toiled".( Simile )
"The long day wanes".( Simile)
" The deep moans round with many voices".(Metaphor)
"The sounding furrows" ( Metaphor)

3. Alliteration

"To strive, to seel to find, not to yield 
create the best example of alliteration".

APPRECIATION

The old Greek hero, Ulysses, wishes to seek a great adventure before his death. His Mariners opposed the thunder and the sunshine with smiling forehead. Ulysses encourages them to continue their struggle up to their last breath. They used to explore when the day was ending when the lights were twinkling. They must respond to the cries of the sea. They must keep their oars in action. They have to fight with the sounding furrows. It is possible that they may be drowned in the middle of their voyage and it is also possible that they may reach Happy Isles. Their national warrior Achilles will greet them in the Islands of joy ( Heaven). They must not worry about their old age. Their bodies are weakened but they have the same confidence and courage. The courage of Ulysses symbolizes the human spirit at its bravest and strongest.
